Ding! Dong! The wicked witch is dead...

I am not usually a fashion blogger...but what the heck why not?! Pardon the bathroom pic...I took it at my grandparent's house, I have seemed to misplaced my camera in all the moving. When I walked in my mom told me that my shoes reminded her of the Wicked Witch of the West....funny because I had started watching The Wizard of Oz today....not like I haven't seen it a billion times before. When my sister was a toddler she LOOOOVED The Wizard of Oz. She wore our first copy on VHS out(yes VHS' were still around)...so I know every word...to the entire movie...any ways back to my clothes.

Necklace: Yokefellow $3
Cardigan: Merona- thrifted at Value Villiage $4
Strapless Dress: Merona thrifted at Goodwill $4.99 (brand new with tags)
Bangles: assorted from Yokefellow and Walmart $8
Tights: George brand @ Walmart $5?
Booties: Cato $19.99

In the next year I hope to do more "fashion" blogs- mainly to show how thrift store items do not have to look like thrift store items.  Stay tuned! XOXO ~Jess

I never thought I would....

....find a dress form thrifting...but I did yesterday. I was so excited although she doesn't look the best but I see the potential. :) I may keep her in my craft room at home or I might take her to the shop to display outfits...I haven't decided. I will post pics later!    <3 Jess

Ritzy B*tch

Yep that's what Chris called me last night.

We invaded Gastonia to go thrifting at Value Village and Goodwill. Chris usually has good luck when we go to Value Village and boy did he have good luck...he ended up getting 4 pairs of work pants, Haggar no less, we can't even find one pair here in his size because he is so tall much less 4. He was in heaven...I totally turned him into my shopping buddy which is fine by me...he's good company and very honest when it comes to my clothing. He even scored a BRAND NEW pair of loafers. NEVER BEEN WORN, STILL IN THE BOX from Johnston and Murphy..I had never heard of them but we liked them and they were $20...when we got out to the truck I looked them up online...they were still selling those shoes...for $189...SCORE one for Chris! But enough about him...back to me being ritzy. I got a Wilson's Leather rabbit fur coat. I have been lusting after fur coats for awhile and this one just spoke to me..it was calling my name...it would have been a shame to just leave it hanging there...so I grabbed it and took it home with me for $30.

I put it on last night and I just felt so great in it...even if it was only rabbit..made me feel like a million bucks.

I am no tennis shoe girl....I always wear boots, heels, flats or flip flops...never tennis shoes but I picked up a very good looking pair of Nike Shocks....Chris and I have decided to start walking in the evenings and on our days off together and I thought these would work for awhile until I am ready to invest in a really good pair.

Well until next time XOXOX ~Jess <3

How Much Was My Outfit?

I like to play a game with my mom and ask her to guess how much my outfit cost. Some times she is right sometimes she is wrong but it's all in fun.  As we ALL know I love thrifting. Its like an addiction to find the best deals..its a rush...I love being able to walk away knowing I have several hundred dollars worth of clothing and only paid $50. But I do limit myself. I find great stuff all the time and many times I do not buy it. I ask myself "Is this really me or do I just like it because its here and name brand?" "How many times will I actually wear this?" then I rationalize it like Becky Bloomwood in the Shopaholic Series...if you haven't read it...go read it..like now. I'll wait..anyways I do try to stick with my own personal style( I am so glad to have the full use of my closet now that we have moved), I honestly can not go into a store and feel good about paying retail for something for myself because I know I can get the same thing at a thrift store! People donate gently used BRAND name clothing all the time. Yes there is a lot of junk, stained and hoely items but then you find the gems in the junk and it makes everything oh so much better. I have been told from others that when they go to thriftstores they do not find anything. Well some days it is like that. There have been days I go and I don't buy anything, other days I rack up. Just look. Be patient. Stick to your personal style and buy things you truely love. I do not look through every single rack but I look at the racks and look for things I like such as colors and prints. Sometimes they are great sometimes it not so much.

The outfit I am wearing today just makes me feel like me and I spent $17 on it. Wish I could take a pic to share but I will describe:

Green Madison 3/4  length swing jacket : $2 -Salvation Army(local)
Black bandage tank: $10 (new at walmart)
Old Navy Jeans: $3- Goodwill (Shelby)
Bitten kitten heels: $3- Goodwill (Shelby)
Total: $17

Is it odd that I remember how much I pay for things and where I got them? I didn't think so!

I have been toying around with the idea to open up an ebay boutique for  year and half but I do not think that is where I need to be...I have thought about opening a store up in the local flea market and I will probably follow through with that soon but for now I have a small resale rack at my mom's cleaners and it does well...just have to get the right people to come in. I always thought the woman picked up and dropped off the dry cleaning but not the case, mostly men come in so this is not the best situation but it costs me no money to have them hang here. But the big dream would to have my own resale shop. Not only dealing with apparel  but home accessories and furniture.   Ah I can dream can't I? I guess I have blabbed on enough...til next time XOXO ~Jess

Home Trends

While we are still moving some things in I do have a few projects up my sleeve. A few months ago we bought a "new" dining room table from Habitat for $75 but it had no chairs. I didn't like the windsor chairs that our previous table included so I knew I wasn't going to reuse them. We discussed using different chairs for  an eclectic feel. I was all on board with that until I went out to our building at our former house. Our landlord had cleaned it out and left what she didn't want, Chris was going to haul off the leftover stash but he hadn't had a chance to do so. I found 4 chairs that were probably from the 70's and have a little modern feel..but they are UGGGGGGGGLLLLYYY. The chrome is rusted, the padding is orange vinyl and the seats were cream. I looked at them and thought...HEYYYY these would be cute with our rustic table (of course remodeled). I knew to get Chris on board I would have to show him a visual so off to Pinterest I go!

Our table <3

I found a few ideas, he agreed, we dug one chair out and brought it to our table and I knew it would be perfect.

inspiration

I do not have a picture of our actual chairs but I plan on changing the fabric to gray....painting the plastic white and the legs I am changing to Oil Rubbed Bronze(ORB). I will post pics as soon as I start working on the project.

Speaking of pinterest...I have already done several projects from there and I did another when we started decorating the livingroom. I had two midsize bookcases that I had NO clue where to put them, because of their size, they were awkward to place. While perusing on pinterest I saw something I knew I  could easily do. It was a couch encased with bookshelves!  Here is my version :)

Stay tuned for more photos!  XOXO~Jess

PSST: The green sailboat painting is down and replaced with our photo collage.

Beetlegeuse Beetlegeuse Beetlegeuse

Our new curtains looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie...which makes me super happy! I just realized a few weeks ago that our kitchen color is actually almost identical of The Maitland's kitchen in Beetlejuice. Anyways...I got the idea for our curtains from pinterest- the most awesome site that ever existed. Seriously. First I tried paint...and failed miserably  so this afternoon I bought fresh curtains, two yards of fabric and heat bond. For under $25 I made some uber fabulous curtains...if I do say so myself. Take a look!

I die. I love them so much....and it makes me love this picture even more that Chris is sitting in front of them. <3
Back to the curtains....I only used two narrow panels because the windows are so gorgeous I do not want to hide them and we live off the road so its not like people will be peeping in here. Have you guys made anything from pinterest? Share!! :) Till next time XOXOXO ~Jess :)

Working on no sleep..

Chris and I moved a few more things into the house last night and actually stayed there. I am so glad we are finally able to enjoy the house instead of laboring in it. We had originally planned to move a little more tonight and then Wednesday move the remainder but mama called to tell me it is suppose to rain alll day Wednesday, so her and The Captain will be helping us tonight to get it ALL.. YAY for help! :)

I did get a little bit done last night...I have the bathroom kinda cleaned up and I have started to decorate it. It is coming along nicely. I was digging in my linens box and came across a shower curtain I had kinda forgot about haha. I had bought it at Goodwill(shocker) and put it up to go into our bathroom...I think it goes nicely in there and it ties everything together. :)

I am still going to bring in some vintage nautical prints and other things to bring the room together. The bathroom is really my favorite room in the house.

Till next time XOXOX ~Jess

I'm Moving On....and other ramblings

Reader Beware: This is a long and pointless blog just to let me brag about our new house....hehe

Yep...I'm moving on to our new house! Woohoo! I really should say we're moving on but with Chris working 60+ hours a week he doesn't have time or the energy to move us so I have stepped up and finished doing the touch ups in the house and actually started our moving process Saturday. Let me tell ya...moving alone sucks! Especially since I was driving his F350.....most of you probably know I'm short(5'4")...so when I have to climb up in to the truck bed...I basically have to jump to get up, which makes it super hard to load the truck up. He told me not to get anything I could know pick up over my head which I wouldn't attempt to any ways, but it even though I could pick up the items it was still super hard to get on the truck. Most of you might not know this but I live at the top of a bad neighborhood. They mainly keep to themselves but it's still not the best situation, so I had to keep my front door open and carry my belongings out to our yard and just prayed no crack head came walking up to steal anything(such as our dvd collection) or walk in on me.  Anyways I got everything on to the truck then hauled my butt up in the bed and rearranged so nothing would fly off as I was driving...I am not the best mover I am positive Chris could have gotten tons more on but I was not taking any chances. I got to the new house and started moving our stuff in...not worried a bit about our things being stolen this time....I adore our new neighborhood!  We(together) will be moving more of our stuff in  the upcoming week and hopefully get to take pictures of the train wreck of a house along the way.

I have been posting mobile photos of before and afters on facebook but my favorite room in the entire house is also the room that was almost a deal breaker...the bathroom. The before picture really does not do the bathroom justice on just how bad it was compared to the rest of the house. The house was built in the 1950's and besides painting and some carpet the house had not been updated...at all. But in all fairness the bathroom wasn't THAT horrible, I have seen far worse in houses much newer than ours. I just really had no clue what I was gonna do with powder blue tile. To our relief Chris' dad, uncles and aunt said they would pay to have it updated...whew...I knew they had good tastes and I was not worried one bit about what they would pick for us...they did one better....they left the choices to us! They did pick out the counter and the vinyl flooring because it was cheap but very good quality...neither of which I had a problem with...I had actually seen the flooring(at habitat) and liked it before it was even bought(great minds think alike I suppose). So with the handy men in place the basically tore out the old fake tile and replace it with new(fake..shh that's our secret) tile around the tub and repaired the drywall in the rest of the room so it could be painted. I am avid follower of Younghouselove.com (seriously they are amazing) and they had posted a photo of a photo a while back that just stuck with me...and I decided to take that image and draw inspiration( I really LOVED the color). I talked to Christopher about painting our tiny(but bigger than our current) bathroom a BOLD color....let me tell you he was not on board with this idea AT ALL. I even showed him the photo...he was still not impressed...I talked and talked and talked some more about this awesome bathroom until he was like OK enough...(we have an agreement if we both do not agree it does not go into our house...actually the same one YHL has but I did not know until later..ha!) He finally agreed to look at paint swatches in the space (one small step for jess.....one giant leap for chris..hehe pun was completely intended..). I stole gathered up a bunch of paint chips from Lowes and we both were really attracted to all three colors on one chip...I had first thought lets do the lighter one....he agreed...but I got to thinking....if we want to go bold....lets go BOLD. So we came to the conclusion just go with the second one...the one we really really loved. Which I am SOOOOO glad we did.

Progress
I plan on making it vintage nautical themed ...since, you know, I love all things ocean and of course vintage. :)...BTW I know the progress photo it was still unfinished but we are finished with this room...the only room that needs to be worked on is the kitchen .

I think I have rambled on enough I will leave you for now..until next time XOXO ~Jess

Living on Pizza and Beer Budget

The problem with living on a "pizza and beer budget" is...I have "caviar and champagne" tastes. But through thrift I have learned over the years I can have both!  Which makes me smile ear to ear. Over the last few weeks Chris and I have went thrifting (shocker!).  Instead of my normal layout with details over what we bought I thought I would just give you the cliffs notes. I am not familiar with men's really expensive name brands but I know an expensive piece when I see one. Example: Last weekend Chris and I went to Value Village in Gastionia...I love that place! The first thing I spot just happened to be for Chris, which were a black square toe shoe by Gordon Rush. They were BRAND FRIGGIN NEW...not knowing the name brand I know they were a quality shoe. So we bought them because they just happened to be in his size, a size 13(!) . When we got back to the truck I looked the shoes up on my phone and sure enough the brand starts off at $175. WHAT?! Yeah that was so worth the mere $14 we splurged(ha!)
Example I found from google

Another example of the champagne lifestyle on a beer budget: Just Wednesday night we were thrifting at Goodwill and Chris found the most beautiful Banana Republic LEATHER jacket for 8 bucks! And it just happened to be in my size....w00t w00t! :)  We also bought some other odds and ends during this trip for our new house including a bee ($0.99) that reminds me of younghouselove.com, if you do not already follow their blog...it is a MUST read! I love their style and taste. They were actually the inspiration for our new house. :) Speaking of our new house it is almost ready! We went to pick our laminate flooring for our master bedroom, dining room/hall, and my craft room from a local home improvement salvage store...we got 513 sq ft for a $1 sq ft annnnnnnd he even threw in free padding! SCORE! I do recommend Earthwise Building Supply in downtown Rutherfordton to all of my local people. It is amazing! We will def. be making another trip to look a little longer! :) I can not wait to share our house when we get everything set up! :)

Til next time XOXO ~Jess

Under $20

Two meals for three people under $20. Mom has been out of town for a few days and I am keeping my sister. I had no plans on what to feed the child but snooping around the internet I found two easy pasta recipes (she loves pasta...who doesn't tho?). The first dinner I made was Lemon Garlic Spaghetti, the recipe serves two but just double it and its EASY. Most of the items you may already have in your pantry.

Lemon Garlic Spaghetti
4 oz dry spaghetti
1/4 cup grated parmesan
2 tsp olive oil
1 clove garlic-minced
1/2 lemon- juice
5-6 basil leaves- chopped

Start boiling water for the spaghetti noodles.
Heat olive oil in small pan on low, add garlic, cook until edges are brown-set aside.
Once water boils, add noodles, cook until tender.
In a large bowl add basil leaves and cheese then toss with noodles, add in the garlic oil and lemon juice...toss. Serve.

The original recipe can be found here. You can add whatever you would like like sauteed mushrooms or like the original recipe called for...pine nuts.

The second is Fettuccine Alfredo. Home Made. Easy peasy.  I'm sure this can easily feed 6. We still have a ton left over lol

Fettuccine Alfredo
2 Sticks of butter (yes glorious, fattening butter)
1/2lb Parmesan- grated (i had just enough from the recipe before)
Salt
1 lb Fettuccine Noodle

Using an electric mixer beat the butter and cheese together until creamy.
Boil salt water, add noodles, cook until al dente
Save 1/2 cup of noodle water
Mix noodles with cheesey butter and 1/4 cup noodle water. If too think add more water.
Serve.

With enough spray paint I could rule the world!

I love love love spray painting stuff. I have always loved taking a blah item adding a bit of paint and WAH LA! its pretty!  Remember my fugly white lamps?
Before
I grabbed my leftover Krylon Oxford Blue paint from my peacocks and started spraying.

getting there

I also went to Wal*Mart and picked up two drum lamp shades to complete the look. Right now I am so in love with blue and green together so I gave our bedroom a mini make over!

Now just imagine this in our new house with soft gray walls! :) Speaking of our new house, we started paint the other day!
Craft Room after two coats!

We plan on painting the trim an ultra white, the walls are a soft gray. The crown molding is down at the moment but that too will be repainted and hung. Good thing I had already planned on the trim to be white because we have brand new, pretty, white ceilings! :)

I love lamp.

Last night me and the bestie loaded up the kiddos to go to Goodwill. While in Goodwill I was looking for more goodies for the new house when I stumbled upon three lamps, two of which are almost identical. The fiance' and  I have been looking for new lamps for our night stands and I thought these would be perfect although I hate the color or lack there of...I looked online to see if I can paint them...which I can so I will be posting pictures of the makeover soon! :)

all three lamps- even if you cant see the black one

Fashion?

My dear, sweet friend Serene at The Elegant Bohemian has suggested I do a fashion blog. Instead of writing a different blog I will post here since most of my clothing comes from thrift stores any ways. I have been thrifting for years, not because I have to but because I LOOOOVE it. I love being able to find something for cheap. Possibly because I am cheap, haha! :)

The other day I was walking around at Walmart when I "dress" caught my eye. Come to find out it is a plus size tunic...that didn't stop me! Since it already had a tie back I got the largest size they had, tried it on for giggles...and it fit perfectly....as a dress!  I have fooled so many people, I just can't wait until fall/winter so I can wear it with a cardi/tights/boots combo.

Here is how I have been wearing it for now, pink tank and black strappy flat sandals(not seen). The "dress" was only $14! Maybe next time I will throw in a cinch belt, but on this day it was a nice breezy dress for a hot day! :) ~ Til next time! XOXOX

Birds Of A Feather

AHHH it's good to be back!   I certainly have not stopped thrifting just haven't had the internet connection! Chris and I turned off our internet at home because of the unreliable service, most days I couldn't even use it.

Enough about that...on to the goodies!

I picked up two UGLY...FUGLY gold peacocks for only $1.99 ea. I loved the shape of the bird but obviously not too crazy about the color. I had originally wanted to paint them a high gloss white but quickly changed my mind and decided to do something a little out of the norm. I luuuurrrvvveee color. So I sprayed them oxford blue! I looooove how they turned out and even got Chris to agree to let me put them in our room when we move!
Before

After (ignore the mess..we're packing!)

One of my FAVORITE finds of late will def have to be my platform BCBG sandals. I picked them up at Goodwill for $3, they retailed for $198! I have only gotten to wear them once but I love how they fit :)

I also have picked up assorted prints for the new house each $5.

1960's Watercolor of Paris

1960's Watercolors of Paris

1970's Norman Rockwell Reproduction-reframed

On one of mini Goodwill adventures which was basically all over South Carolina, we picked up a gorgeous stand up globe for $10!

On the same trip we picked up a SOLID wood KING headboard for ONLY $15!
Chris makes it look small :)

After eye balling a desk at a local furniture consignment store( Making Ends Meet on Thomas St, FC- for the locals) I finally talked  begged Chris to buy  it for me, its new home will be in my craft room and at only $60 I couldn't ask for a better deal!

On a recent shopping excursion I spent 38 bucks on a gorgeous orange chair, a LARGE coffee table and a green lamp!

$30

We haven't gotten to paint our new house yet but as soon as we do I will be posting before and afters.
With my new job we hope that we can get a lot accomplished together and be able to move in by the first of October.  'Til next time! XOXOXO

Clover

Clovers are pretty special to me.Chris always picks me 4 leaf clovers instead of flowers which I love.  When Chris found one the size of my palm behind our house I just knew I had to dry one out to frame and hang on our gallery wall for us to remember our first house by. Right now it is pressed between a large book, another book on top AND our HEAVY old rotary phone. I will update as soon as it has dried! :)

Great News

Chris and I received some great news last week. I didn't want to say anything until we found out for sure but...WE"RE MOVING! We love our little house but we were made an offer we couldn't refuse(Im saying this in the Godfather voice). Like I said in my last post Chris' grandmother passed, her house was already paid off, they wanted family to move in the house to keep it up. It's a 3 bedroom ranch style house. We wont be moving for a few months because the bathroom is going to be remodeled, cleaned out, carpets cleaned and we're going to paint. We are excited and a little sad to be moving out of our first house so soon. I can honestly say that this has been my favorite place to live...except for the neighbors...I can do with out them....HAHA. I can't wait to show before and after pics. :)

6/6/11

WHAT?!

So I know I said a few months ago I wouldn't buy any "new" clothing but Chris' grandmother died and I was in a pinch so I bought a new dress. I call it an investment, it helps me sleep at night. I figure I can wear it to funerals and weddings which are about the same thing...right? HAHA..I amuse myself. I really wish I would have gotten a great picture of Chris and I dressed up but I didn't. I broke down and went to Belk...scoured the sales rack and came across the beautiful dress...it was originally $127...hahaha they are outta their mind..it was marked half price...THEN an ADDITIONAL 50% off...so thats right I got the dress for a whopping $32!  Score one for me!

This is where I would post a photo but Blogger is being updated. Its a retro cut, sleeveless, white with large black flowers and the most precious sash. Will post photos later! :)

Our Flag :)

Man, it's been awhile since I've blogged.  I haven't stopped thrifting by no means just haven't had a moment to get my thoughts in order to actually write a blog.  We have been super busy trying to get our porch and yard looking good. :) Chris scored a ton(literally) of mulch for....$5, yup $5 for all of it. We put it around our trees and in our flower beds.

My favorite tree

our birdbath
Speaking of bird baths...I saw one I fell in love with at Lowes. You might call me crazy but I am in love! <3 It's bright to say the least hehe :) Chris of course vetoed it so I had to leave it :( .

I did however talk him into letting me paint our rusty plant stand blue...score one for me! I picked up a can of spray paint today and got to work.
Before

Blue Ocean Breeze

after
I love it! It brightens up our little porch :), not too bad for $4!

My sweet mama bought us a patio set, although we do not have an actual patio we do have a nice flat area in our backyard. The first night we had it, it came the large storm that knocked over trees all over the county and left people without power. I knew something was going to fall over on top of it or it would blow away but it came away unscathed.

just need an umbrella :)
and just for giggles...me and my cousin went thrifting for her new place and I stumbled upon the most EPIC painting ever...

Michael Jackson?
...It of course is not of Michael Jackson and was probably painted before his operations.

5/1/11

SALE?!

It's not often you catch a sale at Goodwill. I did. Yesterday. Mom, the bestie, her kids and I loaded up and headed to good Ol' Shelby. It just so happens it was their Grand Re-Opening so everything was 25% off. 25% off ridiculously under priced items...YES PLEASE! I got Chris a pair of khakis for work and an AE t shirt, I picked up 2 purses, 2 pairs of Old Navy jeans, a pair of work pants,  a pair of dress shoes, and 2 skirts-one Simply Vera by Vera Wang, the other was Mossimo :). I spend maybe $35 total which is pretty good for me..I had to refrain myself from blowing tons of money because Chris would have killed me lol.

4/30/11

Cookies

The other day I was making cookies but really no place to put them...I really want a cake stand but I have to make do with what I have. I took an old large candle holder and a matching green platter, stuck the platter on the candle holder...PRESTO! Cake Stand! :)

My Rescue

Behind our house we have the cutest building where our land lady had a few things stored. She came over two weekends ago and cleaned out her stuff that she was keeping and asked Chris if he could haul the rest off to the dump. I went out there today and *Chris* found the sweetest picture...I had to have it...so we brought it inside. It was nasty..dirt, dust and grime...ICK. I took a damp wash cloth and cleaned it up..I figured I couldn't mess it up any more than what it was already. It made a HUGE difference!

Can't tell it here but it was gross

Clean and ready to be placed on the wall!

This painting is MASSIVE...it is almost as tall as I am *thats not saying much* and I'm 5'4" I love it ...I love the colors, the simplicity, I just love IT!  Now where to hang it is the question...I do believe it will be residing in our room! :)

Progress

I have been working on my wedding dress off and on over the week and I have made a HUGE difference in it already. I showed the dress to the original owner(because it was given to me) after I had removed the puffy monstrosity that the 80's-early 90's called sleeves. She could not believe her eyes and now I have done even more to it! I am so excited that I will have my dream wedding dress for the fraction of the cost. Lets just hope it doesn't turn into an atrocious attempt at arts & crafts....*fingers crossed*
